HackDTech: Quick Med

As part of DTech, I'm extremely grateful to be a part of this wonderful, diverse community of women in tech. In summer of 2020, DTech held a hackathon for all scholars and associates of the program, with the purpose of focusing resulting efforts on the Black Lives Matter movement and donating all funds to the winners' choice of charity.

My team of four won 1st place in HackDTech with our Quick Med submission: a mobile app that helps patients with chronic illnesses track symptoms and navigate their health in a more accessible way. While one team member, Olivia, worked on designing beautiful wireframes in Figma, the other three of us developed corresponding screens using React Native, splitting up the screens amongst us.

The app includes four main functions:

  1. Daily symptom log

  2. Shareable health summary

  3. Health alerts

  4. Scheduled medication reminders

In designing, the team agreed upon simple, themed graphics to make the entire app cohesive and digestible. With health being a generally complex realm of concepts, we needed to prioritize specific common health terms and points of interests. Therefore, beyond just the time constraints of the hackathon, our limited knowledge of the medical world was another challenge we encountered.

Overall, we were proud to implement what we learned within the hackathon schedule to create an app and "code for good," as HackDTech's motto goes. We were also very excited to win first place and be able to choose Black Table Arts as the organization to donate HackDTech funds to.
